Walter Austill Landis, JR. was born August 1, 1921, the son of Walter and Lou Allyn (Roundtree) Landis; grandson of Captain John C. Landis, CSA; and great-grandson of Israel Landis, who owned Landis Saddlery, designing and manufacturing saddles, including the mochila for the Pony Express, and who was one of the founders of the Mount Mora Cemetery in St. Joseph. Austill graduated from Central High School and St. Joseph Junior College. After serving in the Army, he owned and operated Roundtree Farm near Faucett, Missouri, a Missouri Century Farm owned by the family since 1837. He shared an office in the Corby Building for a number of years with his cousins, John and Garth Landis, both attorneys, and later in the Kirkpatrick Building as the principal for Landis Investment Company. Active in the community, he served on the Mid-Buchanan R-V school board and the county zoning commission. He was a member of the St. Joseph Optimist Club, American Legion Post #359, and Farm Bureau. He was the director of Buchanan County Planning and Zoning from 1983 to 2003, when he retired. He married Barbara Jo Ezzell on June 2, 1956, at the Berming Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Taos, Missouri, near Faucett. He was a faithful Christian. They have four children: Esther (Kevin) George of Weatherby Lake, Missouri; Walter Landis III of Faucett, Missouri; Mary (Jeff) McKnight of Faucett; and Lura Landis (C.J. Kirby) of St. Joseph. Austill and Barbara have ten grandchildren: Jeffrey McKnight (Amber), Tyler McKnight (MacKenzie), Amanda Phillips, Leah Caroline George, Landis George, Jordan Austill Landis, Levi Landis, Walter Clancey Woodward, Bria Kirby, and Olivia Kirby; and four great-grandchildren: Madelyn Blanton, McKenna Phillips, Ella and Hailey McKnight.
