Brief Biography: He is the son of William M. and Malinda E. (Baxter) Elam. He is the husband of Eleanor J. Elam. He worked in his Father's drug store and later operated different drug stores. He graduated from Northwestern Medical College in 1890. He was a Private in Company K (Wickham's Rifles)of the 4th Regiment of the Missouri National Guard. He later became the surgeon of the 4th Regiment with the rank of Major. He served in the U. S. Military during World War I. He was inducted on 16 May 1918. He served as a Captain in the Medical Corps. From 15 September 1918 until 10 January 1919 he served overseas. As a physician he practiced medicine in St. Joseph, Missouri. William Elam lured a man to the Baltimore Hotel in Kansas City Mo, in 1913 and shot him, killing him almost instantly. W. Putnam Cramer was a married man, and had been "flirting" with Dr. Elam's wife. They were not doing anything wrong, but Dr. Elam was convinced otherwise.
