Brief Biography: Fred was born at 1007 North 3rd street above the family cigar and confectionary store and I have a faint recollection of the event, old Grandma Keller waited on my mother at the time and I remember that it was she who took me into the room for a first look at the baby, I took a good look! Oh boy! What a sight! -William Frederick Vollmer, 1941. Fred left High School when 15 years old, took a position with Bradstreet's Commercial Agency, St. Joseph, Missouri. Later on he accepted a situation with George T. Hoagland, Financier. In September 1900 he entered William Jewel College, Liberty, Missouri. Graduated in 1906, having paid for his college courses by tutoring and other work. After graduation he accepted a position with the Y.M.C.A. State Committee as student Secretary for the State of Missouri. In June 1908 went to Gallatin, Missouri as Secretary of the local “Y” and then married. He resigned in 1915 to become manager of the credit department in Weigel Furniture Company, St. Joseph, Missouri. Later on became connected with Townsend-Wyatt-Wall Department Store, St. Joseph. In December 1924 he went to Miami, Florida as manager of credit department in E. B. Douglas Department Store. Left from there to accept a similar position with Burdine’s Department Store, Miami. He resigned in 1930 on account of poor health, but has been connected with the latter firm since then in various departments as a seasonal employee. -William Frederick Vollmer, 1941. Asheville Citizen, Asheville, North Carolina Thursday August 6, 1953 Fredrick F. Vollmer RIDGECREST, Aug. 5 -Funeral services for Fredrick F. Vollmer, 76, of Ridgecrest and Miami, Fla., who died yesterday in an Asheville hospital after a brief illness will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Ridgecrest Baptist Church. The Rev. Cecil Perry and the rev. Hight C. Moore will officiate. the body will be taken to St. Joseph, MO. for burial. Active pallbearers will be Joe Hollifield, W. M. Pate, Leon Quinn, Paul Turner, Clarence Allison and Robert Allman. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men’s bible Class of the church. Vollmer, a native of St. Joseph, MO., resided in Miami for 29 years where he was credit manager of Burdine’s Department Store. He was associated for several summers with Bon Marche store in Asheville. Surviving is one son, Garner Vollmer of Houston, Tex. It is requested that no flowers be sent but that contributions be made instead to the ridgecrest Baptist Church. Black Mountain News August 13, 1953 Funeral Services for Fredrick F. Vollmer, who died in an Asheville hospital tuesday of last week were conducted Thursday morning at eleven o’clock at our church by the Rev. Cecil M. Perry and Dr. Hugh C. Moore. Simple but beautiful services of scripture reading and quartette music by Annette Darcey, Cora Mae rickey, Bill Ladner and Larry Powers who sang “O, Love That Will Not Let Me Go” and “Jesus the Very Thought of Thee” with Miss Emily Dance at the organ. Pall bearers were Joe Hollifield, W. M. Pate, Leon Quinn, Leonard Biddix, Clarence Allison and Robert Allman. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Mo. the family requested that no flowers be sent but that contributions be made to the Ridgecrest church which he attended and loved so much. His only son and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Garner Vollmer arrived from their Houston, texas home in time for the services.
